Green Ideas
Having a green wedding is no different than living
a green lifestyle: don't use so much stuff! For the stuff you do
use, choose sustainable, recycled, organic, and local where possible.
We have tried to compile some useful tips and links we've come
across for "the big stuff", along with links to other guides.
We've also tried to note which links are local to Seattle.
This is a work in progress--please send us tips and links you'd like to add.
ATTIRE & ACCESSORIES
Of course we'd love for you to shop
with us, especially if you are local! If we don't have what you
want, though, here are some other great on-line shops to try.
CEREMONY & RECEPTION
Consider having the ceremony and reception at
the same location, or at least as close to each other as possible to
cut down on driving.
Bring the party to your family by choosing a venue close to where the
majority of your guests live to reduce the pollution generated by
travel.
Give guests organic flower petals or lavender buds to toss instead of
birdseed. Standard birdseed mixes often contain invasive,
non-native plant seeds--plants that can wreak havoc to an ecosystem
long after your wedding.
Enjoy butterflies in their natural setting. Releasing butterflies
at your ceremony can disrupt wild butterflies' migration and spread
disease or parasites.
Choose a venue or caterer who uses local, organic ingredients. If you can't find one, ask.
Make sure your vendors and venue recycle!
FLOWERS
GIFTS & REGISTRY
Skip the wedding favors. It is one less detail to worry
about and your guests probably won't even notice. If
you absolutely must have favors, at least consider planet-friendly items
like soy votives, flower seeds, organic candies, or small potted
plants.
For the wedding party, consider non-material gifts, like massage
therapy gift certificates, useful gifts like wine, soap, fair trade
coffee, or 100% recycled or tree free gifts.
If your home is already furnished, consider "registering" for donations to your favorite charities.
INVITATIONS, PROGRAMS, ETC
Traditional paper products are one of
the easiest areas in which to go green.
There is a growing variety of recycled and tree-free papers available
from specialty shops and even large retailers.
Even with green options, the less you use, the better! Keep your invites short and sweet by placing all of
the "insert" information on a website. Skip the inner envelope and tissue inserts. You'll not only save paper,
you'll save money on postage.
RINGS
Blood diamonds, dirty gold--who wants that as a
symbol of their love? Especially when there are so many eco-friendly choices readily available.
Green ring options include reseting stones from family jewelry,
shopping for vintage or antique pieces, or having rings created from
reclaimed metal.
(Tattoo rings are beautiful too, and eliminate all
of the mining issues, just be
sure to do your research and make sure they are right for you.
Finger tattoos can take a longer time to heal than other tattoos,
as well as fade faster and become distorted.)
